John Hayes MP visits Spalding Grammar School
We welcomed the local MP, John Hayes to our final assembly of the term on 1st April. He gave his thoughts on Easter and about his political beliefs after which three pupils were able to ask him questions about various topics. This assembly concluded a series of visits from local politicians from across the political spectrum.
We also said farwell to Mrs Ann-Marie Walsh who conducted the chamber choir in a performance of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen as a fitting swan song. The performance was well recieved and was greeting by raptuous applause.
Musical Extravaganza 2010
On Thursday 25th March, Spalding Grammar School's music department showed off its musical talent to an enthusiastic audience. All the major ensembles performed a range of styles from High Baroque to music from the shows. We also heard exciting solo performances from members of year 13 before they leave for pastures new. William Turner treated us with the sublime Arabesque in D major by Claude Debussy and Shane Bailey gave a good rendition of Here's looking at you kid by The Gaslight Anthem. David Malkin joined forces with former student, Charles Pell to form Tandem, a new and exciting folk combo. David and Charles performed original tracks from their new CD release titled After the gate. Alex Sharp played a tour de force called Those that fight for piano by Nobuo Uematsu. This piece put both the player and piano through their paces and received great applause.
The concert was tinged with certain sadness as we said farewell to Ann-Marie Walsh as she is leaving us before Easter to take up her new job with the Lincolnshire Music Service as Lead Vocal Tutor. Ann-Marie lead two ensemble groups during the evening. The year 10 & 12 music students performed two contrasting pieces with unconventional instrumentation. Diners Club featured knifes and forks to play complex rhythms on various kitchen equipment and Me Tarzan, you Jane required the performers to tap complex rhythms on themselves. The concert concluded with a selection of music from the Chamber choir under the direction of Ann-Marie and superbly accompanied by Mr Garford. The group started with a Finnish song called Kiiriminna which combined a traditional melody with a Finnish rap and ended the concert with a performance of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody for choir and band bringing the whole musical marathon to a close.
The concert was supported by music staff from the Lincolnshire Music Service and we are indebted to Mr Bower and Mr Taylor for their expert leadership. All proceeds from the concert will go towards supporting future musical events.
